Understanding the 2025 UK Prescribing Guidelines for Medical Aesthetics

As experienced aesthetic nurses, we wholeheartedly welcome the upcoming changes to prescribing regulations in the UK aesthetics industry. From 1 June 2025, all nurse and midwife prescribers will be required to carry out face-to-face consultations before prescribing injectable treatments, such as anti-wrinkle products (Botox). Remote prescribing will no longer be permitted.

At AH Aesthetics, patient safety has always been our top priority. These changes reflect the professional and ethical standards we’ve always believed in - and we're pleased to see the industry moving in a safer, more accountable direction.

Why the Change Matters

For too long, the aesthetics industry has been under-regulated. In some cases, treatments have been carried out by non-medical or poorly trained individuals, with prescriptions issued remotely, often without the patient ever meeting the prescriber. This puts both the patient and the prescriber at risk.

With the new rules from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), there will be no room for shortcuts. Every patient receiving a prescription-only injectable will now need to be assessed in person by a qualified prescriber before treatment can go ahead.

This is a vital step forward for patient safety, professionalism, and transparency across the industry.

What This Means for You as a Patient

If you're thinking about (or already having) aesthetic treatments, here's what the new guidelines mean for your care:

  • You’ll meet your prescriber face to face

Whether you're receiving anti-wrinkle injections or another prescription-based treatment, you will now have an in-person consultation with the prescriber beforehand. This gives you the chance to ask questions, discuss your medical history, and make informed decisions - without any pressure.

  • You’ll receive safer, more personalised treatment

A proper medical consultation means your treatment plan will be tailored to your face, goals, and health profile. This reduces the risk of complications and ensures your treatment is truly right for you.

  • You’ll be under the care of accountable professionals

With these changes, prescribers are required to follow strict professional standards. This raises the bar for everyone involved in aesthetics and protects you as the patient.

What We’re Doing at AH Aesthetics

We’ve always operated with patient safety at the heart of what we do. All consultations for prescription treatments have, and always will, be carried out in person by a qualified nurse prescriber. This new regulation only formalises what we already believe is best practice.

As educators, we’re also proud to train the next generation of aesthetic professionals with these values in mind. Our courses are designed to produce confident, competent practitioners who put ethics, safety, and evidence-based care above all else.

In Summary

These new prescribing regulations are a huge win for patients, practitioners, and the reputation of the aesthetics industry. By ensuring face-to-face consultations and eliminating remote prescribing, they protect your health, safety, and peace of mind.

At AH Aesthetics, we fully support this change - and remain committed to raising the standard of aesthetic care in the UK.
